Orthopedic Physiotherapy is the genre where a therapist addresses mainly the patient's musculoskeletal ailments. Major role it plays involves rehabilitation of Joint movements, Muscle strengthening, Balance training, postural correction and to help patients to achieve an independent functional capacity in the aspects of all day living activities. Orthopedic Physiotherapy also deals with post operative care of the patients.
Neuro-Physiotherapy is the branch that deals with muscle stiffness, spasticity, weakness of muscle, tremor, problems with sensation, gait and balance impairments etc arising due to pathology in the nervous system. These symptoms can lead to problems with all day living activities such as ambulation, grooming and feeding. Neurological Physiotherapy also deals with loss of hand and arm, or leg and foot function, walking, spasticity and pain. It also deals with complex conditions like Stroke,Head Injuries Spinal Cord Injuries, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinsonism, Cerebral Palsy.
Cardio-respiratory physiotherapy aims to help clear lung secretions, prevent or improve areas of lung collapse and reduce the effort of breathing. It also helps in strengthening of respiratory muscles. Physiotherapy is important for patients requiring mechanical ventilation for preventing or resolving respiratory complications. This enables ventilation to be stopped as quickly as possible, helping reduce the length of time spent on intensive care and promoting a speedy discharge from hospital.
Pediatric physiotherapy provides care for any child aged between New-Born to Young Adults. Physiotherapist will inevitably work within the context of the child and his family and have opportunity to work with the child in a range of situations extending into home, pre school groups, education and leisure activities. Pediatric physiotherapist deals with childhood disabilities like cerebral palsy, Autism, Club foot, developmental delay, Downs’s syndrome, Muscular defects, cardiac defects etc.
Sports Physiotherapy is the specialised branch of physiotherapy which deals with injuries and issues related to sports people. Sports injuries do differ to everyday injuries. Athletes normally require high level performance and demand placed upon their body, which stresses their muscles, joints and bones to the limit their performance. Sports physiotherapists help athletes recover from sporting injuries, and provide education and resources to prevent problems.
Geriatric physiotherapists help elderly patients achieve or maintain high levels of physical health as they age by focusing on ailments like arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, and joint soreness. They evaluate each patient and design a custom activity and exercise plan that will allow the patient to remain as physically fit and active as possible. Once the activity plan has been implemented, the geriatric physical therapist monitors the patient's progress and changes the plan as needed.
